The Residue Number System (RNS) as an alternative to binary representations in digital systems has been around for several decades.
The attractive feature of the RNS is that for operations such as multiplication and addition, a large dynamic range can be divided into subranges of reduced dynamic. The advantage is that the computation stream is split into independent channels of reduced dynamic range which implies shorter carry propagation.
The main drawback is that to interface a RNS datapath to the conventional binary representation converters are required.
