Abstract: In the analysis of complex systems (as the autonomic nervous system that governs the heart rate) one often presents the data in the form of recurrence or phase space plots. We demonstrate a new way to analyze such systems by the multipole expansion of the gravitational potential of the two-dimensional phase-space plot, where the density of points determines the mass density. We apply our approach to the heart beat interval series and find the the new measure is more effective than the traditional measures applied in research and clinics.
