Abstract: Using an example of cavity solitons in
optical parametric oscillators (OPO) I study interplay between conservative
and dissipative dynamics. It is demonstrated that Hopf instability of the
dissipative solitons can be directly associated with internal modes of their
conservative counterparts. The latter ones are free propagating quadratic
solitons in this case. Linear stability analysis and numerical simulation
also reveal multistability and complex instability induced spatio-temporal
dynamics of the single- and multi-hump cavity solitons. Problem of frequency
selection in OPO with nondegenerate signal and idler is also examined and
it is shown that soliton excitation naturally selects strictly defined
frequency difference between idler and signal fields. This frequency
selection is proved to be directly linked with the relative energy balance
between the idler and signal.
