Abstract: It is well known that semiconductor lasers have a chaotic output when exposed to weak external fields. Most theoretical work has focused on the chaotic dynamics of a single laser cavity mode. Using numerical simulations, I investigate the unique phenomena that occur when the chaotic behaviour induces two or more laser cavity modes. I will focus on two systems - external optical injection and delayed optical feedback. In the case of delayed optical feedback I will demonstrate a novel communication scheme which uses synchronized chaos.
