Abstract: The thermodynamic limit of the Heisenberg model is studied in detail. Using the string hypothesis, the Bethe equations are transformed into a linear integral equation for the densities. Solving this equation we derive the structure of the spectrum and the energy of the ground state of the antiferromagnetic chain.
