Title: How can sensor data be used to infer how people feel?
Abstract:
We will introduce the general work in the group first and then focus on our mobile sensing research.
As the usage of sensor-rich smartphones continues to grow, so too does the opportunity for researchers to leverage this device in order to gain insight into our daily lives. In this talk, we will discuss the EmotionSense system- our recent research that aims to build a bridge between the data streams that our phone's sensors can provide and our well-being. We will discuss how EmotionSense currently makes inferences from sensor data, and an on-going study that revisits this domain by seeking to collect samples of sensor data that users manually label with their current mood. We have found that conducting such studies brings to light the intersection between the challenges of building sensor-based and interaction-based systems.
Bios:
Dr. Cecilia Mascolo is a Reader in Mobile Systems in the Computer Laboratory, University of Cambridge, UK. Cecilia¹s research concentrates on mobility and social data gathering, analysis, modeling and exploitation through research council and industry funded projects. Most of the projects are multi-disciplinary. Her research strategy is heavily experimental and deployment oriented. She has published extensively in the areas of mobile sensor networks, mobile network routing, realistic mobility models and social network analysis. Cecilia has served as in the Organization Committees of many mobile and sensor systems, social network, middleware, software engineering and data mining conferences and workshops. She is on the editorial board of IEEE Internet Computing, IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing and IEEE Pervasive Computing. More details of her profile are available here.
Dr. Neal Lathia is a Research Associate in the Networks and Operating Systems Group of Cambridge University's Computer Laboratory, where he is working on the EPSRC UBhave (Ubiquitous and Social Computing for Positive Behaviour Change) Project. He holds an MSc and a PhD from UCL and has expertise in mobile computing, social and recommender systems. He is involved in the organization of various workshops and conferences in the area of ubiquitous and recommendation systems and has published extensively in these areas.
